The only Italian grammar book you need at the Beg/Int level

I have used several Italian grammar books. This one, which is used by the Società Dante Alighieri in Rome, has the best structure, clarity and depth: teaching you the nuances of the Italian language (formal vs. informal, spoken vs. written, etc). The 25 chapters consist of the following themes/topics: 1. "Se permette, mi presento" (let me introduce myself) - present indicative 2. "A sciare" (skiing) - action verbs, simple prepositions 3. "Una serata al cinema" (an evening at the cinema) - irregular verbs, prepositions, interrogative 4. "Paolo ha cambiato casa" (Paolo has moved house) - near past, transitive and intransitive verbs, auxiliary verbs 5. "Una lettera" (a letter) - possessive 6. "Un fine-settimana al mare" (a weekend at the sea) - future 7. "In cerca di lavoro" (in search of work) - direct pronouns 8. "Soggiorno di studio in Italia" (study in Italy) - imperfect indicative 9. "In giro per acquisti" (shopping trip) - indirect pronouns 10. "Nozze in vista" (upcoming wedding) - reflexive verbs 11. "Parlando di politica" (speaking of politics) - imperative 12. "A cena fuori" (dinner out) - simple conditional, particles 13. "Un invito mancato" (missed invitation) - compound conditional 14. "L'italiano e i dialetti" (Italian and dialects) - relative pronouns 15. "Paese che vai, problemi che trovi" (country that you go to, problems that you find) - comparative, interrogative 16. "Un popolo del tempo che fu" (people of the time that was) - remote past, indefinite 17. "Il prezzo del progresso" (the price of progress) - pluperfect, agreement of the indicative tense 18. "Progetti di viaggio" (travel projects) - present and past conjunctive 19. "Muoversi in citta'" (moving to a city) - indirect imperative 20. "Luoghi comuni sull'Italia" (common places in Italy) - imperfect conjunctive, past perfect 21. "Venerdi' 17" (Friday, the 17th) - agreement of mood and time 22. "Tempo libero e divertimenti" (free time and diversions) - hypothetical, form changes of substantive nouns, adjectives and adverbs 23. "Una visita medica" (medical visit) - passive, impersonal 24. "Automobile, che passione!" (cars, what a passion!) - implicit (gerund, infinitive, participle) 25. "Vita dura per i pedoni!" (hard life for pedestrians!) - direct and indirect discourse Each chapter starts with an introductory dialogue or letter that shows you usage in specific contexts. The introduction is followed by different exercises (fill in the blank, copying sentence structure, reading comprehension questions, and open-ended questions). By the end of the book, you will have learned more than 2000 of the mostly commonly used words in Italian. The one aspect that Americans will find odd is that the table of contents is at the back of the book. Make sure you get the answer key that accompanies this book. Highly recommended!
