Quite Educational

This book was provided as a newborn baby gift to one my friends. While the recipient did not find it appropriate for her baby, I found it quite educational. While I currently live in New Jersey, I will be prepared for hurricanes should I travel to the midwest someday. Although I do not recommend it as a baby gift, i do recommend you buy this book.

Deadly Winds...For Younger Readers!

Tornados are wonders of nature. Those swirling columns of destruction can level whole city blocks yet pick up an 1-month old infant and deposit him 300 feet away safe and sound. Some are less than 100 feet in diameter; others, two MILES! Some are on the ground for seconds; others for a hour or more. Jessica Randolph examines these awe-inspiring, terrifying winds in this 2010 Bearport Publishing release. Intended for readers 9-12, Randolph explains the phenomenon of tornados in clear, concise terms. Several eyewitness accounts from tornado survivors are included as well. She also discusses tornado safety tips. The text is nicely illustrated with b & w and color photographs, maps and diagrams. As a primer for younger readers, ERASED BY A TORNADO is hard to beat. Recommended.

Great Kids Book

I got this book for my nephew and he loved it--and so did I! I highly recommend it. 'Erased by a Tornado" clearly explains how these powerful storms form and includes historical and modern first-person stories. It covers everything--storm chasers, the kind of damage twisters cause, and the odd things that happen during tornadoes (like people being carried long distances and surviving). The author, Jessica Rudolph, has a clear, concise and matter of fact delivery perfect for young children and older kids. She does not sensationalize, and includes a section on what to do to protect yourself if you find yourself in the path of a tornado. Kids, and adults as well, will learn a lot. Superb color photos too!! I recommend this book as well as the entire Bearport disaster series (about tsunamis, heat waves, blizzards, etc.). I have bought other Bearport educational kids books in the past and they always deliver high quality books, this one being among the best!
