I think this book must have some very good points. However, even looking at the cover, one sees a GLARING omission. This poor little baby, looking up for help and love, is not even having its little head supported! At least, not that I can see. One hand is lovingly on the what looks to be a towel in which the baby is wrapped....but the other hand? It seems nowhere near the baby, and is definitely NOT supporting the baby's head. And supporting a baby's head is one of the most important things that anyone holding a baby should know! One thing that strikes me as very amusing is the TITLE of this book. "Crying and Restlessness In Babies. A Parent's Guide to Natural Sleeping". One wonders, upon reading the title, whether it is the Baby's, or Parent's "natural sleeping" that is being discussed here..... Long ago, on a New York radio station, I heard this tip -- which works. And that is, if your baby is crying and you want it to stop, simply make a recording of THAT baby crying. Then, have the baby listen to the recording. It's almost as if he or she is seeing a mirror for the first time -- the shock is so great that the baby will become quiet, instantly! Now, as far as I know, this report was given as soon as the discovery was made, so any long-range effects of this technique were unknown. To lessen any potential shock, I think I'd let the baby cry for a little while, before letting him/her tackle to these slighty more-modes. I'm sure this book is filled with many tips. Here is one, above, however, that parents might definitely want to try. My next- door neighbour tried it -- and it worked! Remember too, the story about the aeroplane that's in trouble Though instinct will lead any parent to help their children first, one must remember, instead, to help one's self first, and put the one's own oxygen mask, first! Otherwise, you soon will not be able to help anyone else...or yourself. The same goes for care- ing for a baby in any non-aeroplane environment. Take care of yourselves, first, parents....rest up! THEN, and only then, will you be able to give your baby the care he or she definitely deserves! <3 !

Use the good, leave out the bad

As mentioned by the reviewer above, this book does suggest to let your baby cry in an effort to help baby rest. Many people including myself, don't agree with that. However, this book says a lot more, and it explains the rythm in babies (sleep-eat-play, sleep-eat-play...) and can be very helpfull to new parents. Often new parents overwhelm newborns (with love and play) and baby does not rest well/enough. The guidelines the author offers about how long a baby should be awake depending on age, do work. And you can put them into practice without having to let your baby cry at all. In extreme situations the author suggests to let the baby cry. My situation was not extreme, and I do not agree with that concept. If you feel the same way, skip that chapter and read the rest. I found the information given in this book very usefull.
