In Zophie and the Lawyer, a young attorney's convictions are tested when he uncovers evidence of war crimes perpetrated by his own government. Add in a budding romance with beautiful witness who is in constant danger because of what she knows, the stage is set for a head on clash between his loyalty to his country and his duty to the truth. At the onset of World War II, newly inducted defense lawyer Paul Moller finds himself assigned to investigate war crimes perpetrated by Poles against members of the German Army. But when he reports for duty in Poland, his new superior, General Blaskowitz, instead wants him to look into allegations of crimes by Germans, especially a newly constituted SS unit, against Polish civilians. Beginning his investigation, a skeptical Moller finds little until a local girl named Sophie helps him unravel evidence of a vicious war crime. As his relationship with Sophie deepens, reports of many such crimes involving the SS reach Blaskowitz. To curb this rising problem, he has Moller assist him in bringing the crimes to the attention of the highest level of government. When their efforts are dismissed, they realize the incidents are part of a deliberate Nazi policy to subjugate the Polish people. As Sophie herself becomes caught up in the terror, Moller is forced to take action. Although a work of historical fiction, General Blaskowitz is real, and was confronted with just such a set of circumstances in the early months of the Second World War. How he and others confronted the increasing menace of Nazi terror is a story that deserves to be told.
