ZOMBIE'S MANDATE is a fantasy akin to the film MIDNIGHT IN PARIS. An aspiring novelist, Luke Blue Miller, experiences a drunken hallucination which takes over his life. Quentin Compson, a character from THE SOUND AND THE FURY, arises as a zombie from the Charles River, where he drowned himself. He tells Luke to find the author and demand that he rewrite the novel so that he can live his life. Luke is so frightened and innocent that he sets out to find other Faulkner characters who could lead him to the writer himself. Settings for the action include Boston, Memphis, Oxford, Mississippi, and post-Katrina New Orleans. Howard Hawks, the late Hollywood director, appears as a ghost, and so does Faulkner, who speaks forcefully about art and narrative fiction. Readers have called the fantasy "an adventurous romp," and a "must read" for fans of Faulkner and the literature of the South.
