Probably one of the best Philip Marlowe tributes written. Great sense of place, and purpose. What crime fiction should aspire to: real people contending with the real world. Damn funny and stylish too, with a touch of heartbreak.
Imagine the High Lonesome Sound

A good thriller, with something extra... emotion. You feel for these characters, and they live in your memory for a long time. I've read this book three times, and see something new with each look-see. Refreshing to see a hero who is flawed, not some fantasy for adult readers to identify with. Virgil Proctor, and the people he encounters, have the absolute torch and twang of real life.
Cowboy Noir DeLuxe

A gritty, sexy, funny picture of subterranean life in Oakland CA, told through the eyes of a displaced cowboy, ex-cop, failed parent, and half-assed sleuth named Virgil Proctor. Like the Virgil of Dante's Inferno, the narrator leads you on a trip through the underworld. If you like the wise-cracking heroes of Raymond Chandler and James Crumley, grab a copy of this book...
