Finalist, 2024 CrimeCon Clue Award, True Crime Book of the Year Winner, 2025 Georgia Independent Author of the Year (Memoir) Winner, 2025 Georgia Spotlight Award (GIAA) Like a nonfiction John Grisham thriller with echoes of Rainman, Just Mercy, and a captivating smalltown Southern setting, this is the fascinating true story--sometimes humorous, sometimes heartbreaking--of an idealistic young lawyer determined to free an innocent neurodivergent man accused of murdering the wife no one knew he had. An inspiring argument for compassion in the pursuit of true justice for readers of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and Just Mercy. Was this small-town TV repair man "a harmless eccentric or a bizarre killer" (Atlanta Journal Constitution). For the first time, Alvin Ridley's own defense attorney reveals the inside story of his case and trial in an extraordinary tale of friendship and an idealistic young attorney's quest to clear his client's name--and, in the process, rebuild his own life. In October 1997, the town of Ringgold in northwest Georgia was shaken by reports of a murder in its midst. A dead woman was found in Alvin Ridley's house--and even more shockingly, she was the wife no one knew he had. McCracken Poston had been a state representative before he lost his bid for U.S. Congress and returned to his law career. Alvin Ridley was a local character who once sold and serviced Zenith televisions. Though reclusive and an outsider, the "Zenith Man," as Poston knew him, hardly seemed capable of murder. Alvin was a difficult client, storing evidence in a cockroach-infested suitcase, unwilling to reveal key facts to his defender. Gradually, Poston pieced together the full story behind Virginia and Alvin's curious marriage and her cause of death--which was completely overlooked by law enforcement. Calling on medical experts, testimony from Alvin himself, and a wealth of surprising evidence gleaned from Alvin's junk-strewn house, Poston presented a groundbreaking defense that allowed Alvin to return to his peculiar lifestyle, a free man. Years after his trial, Alvin was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, a revelation that sheds light on much of his lifelong personal battle--and shows how easily those who don't fit societal norms can be castigated and misunderstood. Part true crime, part courtroom drama, and full of local color, Zenith Man is also the moving story of an unexpected friendship between two very different men that changed--and perhaps saved--the lives of both.
A great story of the deep spiritual development of two very different men.

A true story set in Georgia of the trial of a man arrested for the keeping of his wife secluded at home, and for her murder. There is so much depth to this story; the explanation of criminal defense law, the life of the accused, deep south humor, and the deep friendship that developed between the accused and his attorney. A MUST READ!!!
What an attorney and defendant!

A true, brilliantly told story that will keep you eagerly anticipating the next page! I laughed, cried, shook my head in disbelief (you’ll see), and finished the book feeling like a cheerleader for both the attorney and his client. A movie is surely in the works! In summary, I would highly recommend it! We can’t always judge another human by that human’s packaging (you’ll see)!
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil for a new generation.

The cadence and storytelling style harkens back to the earlier work of another book that followed a murder trial in the south. But where Midnight followed a dark story that left the reader wondering about the actual guilt or innocence of the accused, Zenith Man is a stubborn pursuit of the truth and innocence where the accused is not always a willing participant in the hunt! An incredibly entertaining read that follows a path to redemption for both the client and attorney that leads to a decades long friendship between two very different men, where neither realized how much they needed the other. Top shelf writing!
Stranger Than Fiction Book About the True Crime That Wasn't!
Published by Amy , 2 years ago
Written in highly entertaining style,The Zenith Man is the ultimate true crime that wasn't! You won't be able to put down this tale of the arrest and murder trial of Alvin Ridley, an older man with undiagnosed autism, who was accused of keeping his rarely-seen reclusive wife imprisoned and eventually killing her. It is also about the unlikely friendship that developed between these two very different people.
Besides true crime fans (especially those true crimes that are stranger and more fascinating than fiction), folks who love someone with an intellectual disability will love this book. When those with autism and the like encounter the legal system, the results are rarely good and often disastrous, as in Alvin's case. Hopefully, Poston's book will help bring light to the hidden plight of those who have to face the justice system without having the capacity to quite understand what is going on. Thank goodness McCracken Poston stepped up or Alvin Ridley might be another innocent man sitting or dying behind bars.
The Zenith Man is filled with colorful, sometimes flamboyant small town characters. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you will LOVE THIS BOOK.
