Arizona Ames is one of Zane Grey’s finest heroes. And the story is set in the Tonto Basin, Zane Grey’s favorite place to set his stories. Here, Rich Ames returns to set things right. Desert Gold has a slow beginning, a prologue, which you can just skip if you wish, and you will never miss it. From Chapter One the book takes off like a bullet and never slows down, as Border Rangers patrol the U.S./Mexico border on the lookout for illegal drug smuggling and illegal immigration—not Mexicans, but Chinese who were being smuggled into the U.S. at that time. Twin Sombreros is a piece of fluff, and by no means am I being denigrating to this novel. But by the time Zane Grey wrote this, his best days, were behind him with one of two exceptions, and he had become a lot like other “western” writers of the day. And Under the Tonto Rim is one of Zane Grey’s best romantic novels, again set in the Tonto Basin. Here a state welfare worker comes to the region hoping to help these rustic people achieve better lives. Only the welfare worker comes to learn about and love one of them. All four of these novels are worth having and reading over and over.
