Life-Relevant Preteen to Adult Devotional/Borderline Study Bible

'The Youth Bible' is inviting in its readability and relevancy to daily living. This New Century Version (NCV) is a dynamic or functional equivalence translation that is easier to read than the NIV and despite some compromise in accuracy, it's not to the degree of others' and is appropriate to the format of being a devotional, rather than study Bible. That said, there are some key features to enhance studying, such as (1) concise book intros that include the book's purpose, historical context, map and timeline, and (2) dual purpose dictionary/topical index at the back. There are not, however, the potential distractions of copious verse-by-verse notes or cross-references, though there are some "For More, See..." verse citations in each of the devotional boxes. These devotional boxes are the notable feature of this Bible, and while targeted to teens, are suitable for adults interested in God's wisdom regarding life issues (for ex, Decision Making, Fear, Money, Rumors, Justice, Government, Popularity, Priorities, Non-Christians, Illness, Sexuality, Suffering, etc.).
Not Just For Kids!

I have purchased at least 5 of these bibles for my family and a friend's family. This book is so easy to read and understand. It is just as wonderful for adults as it is for teens. I love the maps at the beginning of each book of the bible, as well as the timeline of when the stories in that book took place. There are neat short stories of present day situations at the end of each chapter that help anyone understand how the lessons in that chapter apply to today's problems and situations. I can't say enough about this book.
Our church kids love it.

After previewing a LOT of Bibles to give to our church confirmation class, we chose this one because of its layout, "sidelights" (fun bits of background trivia about the passages that were new to many of our adults), and its devotional sidebars. Most of the devotionals offered in the other youth Bibles we previewed get very preachy, offering easy answers for tough questions, and taking an editorial stance that betrays the prejudices of its editors. This Bible, by contrast, offers less pat answers; it raises questions, clarifies confusing issues, and refers back to other passages. The contemporary scenarios they offer (which all the youth study Bibles do) are less simplistic. This allows the Bible to speak for itself, and invites the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. As an adult, I prefer the NRSV or NIV translations, but I first read the Bible with a modern English tranlsation, and as those go, this one is good. And our number one priority is that the kids read it. Bottom line: Our youth reviewers loved it. And the kids from LAST year's confirmation class asked if we could order copies for them!
