Synopsis: Your Nightmare My DomainCurrently paramedics and the mystery of the work that they do are in vogue publicly and on TV. Many people want to know about the work, the experiences, emotions and the lives of a paramedic.As a paramedic of twenty years, service, I have an insight into the history and transformation of ambulancemen of old to the paramedic of today.As Chairman of The Wallasey branch of the Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (AEMT) I was part of a group of ambulancemen/women who spearheaded the drive for Advanced Life Support (ALS) training, a pre-cursor to paramedics. I set up and ran night-classes for potential paramedics and enjoyed a 100% success rate. One of my students went on to become a university lecturer in paramedical science.As part of Merseyside Metropolitan Ambulance service, against the wishes of my employer and the Merseyside Regional Health Authority (MRHA) I organised and set up the first Paramedic training programme. With help of sympathetic Anaesthetists, surgeons, GPs and a similar group from Brighton Ambulance Service we eventually convinced the Thatcher government to roll-out and fund the paramedic scheme nationally (post Brighton Bomb).Merseyside became the fastest responding paramedic service in the UK. Sadly today we hear of injured people being left in pain and distress for hours before an emergency paramedic arrives. Why is this?I became a paramedic trainee assessor, and ironically my career came to an abrupt end as a result of a serious, bus versus ambulance, road accident.My book is written in subject form so that the reader can pick it up at any point. The book covers many of my experiences some of which today's modern paramedic (thanks to health and safety) would never contemplate attempting to emulate. Such things as physically, fighting for my life, with a gunman. My entering burning buildings, during a fire Brigade strike. Entering police 'no go areas' during the Liverpool riots, invading a police siege to rescue a baby from a murderous mother...too late to save the infants life. Literally running at a man in the middle of a stabbing frenzy as he tried to murder another man.Just some of the true stories in my book 'Your Nightmare My Domain'.
