Your Hair My Hair

Your Hair, My Hair is a story about a little girl named Samantha who learns about the physical differences between herself and her peers with child's play with dolls. The story is very simple. I intended to pull normal childhood experiences from the early stages from the women in my life. My oldest sister and mother both share similar stories about their interactions about their physical appearance. Even still in 2015, there still hasn't been a consistent dialogue between adults and children about the difference in racial and cultural backgrounds. I want to present an alternative by helping those understand cultural diversity in the classroom and in their everyday life. At the young age when children discover their own independence and begin inquiring within, they find themselves faced with questions their peers are unsure how to answer. My goal of this book is to provide a positive message of self respect and appreciation towards everyone. I try to bridge the gap between child and adult by examining different racial and cultural groups by using pleasant imagery and simple dialogue throughout the book. I also try to include a poem that establishes love and acceptance of all people.
