Your First Basic Handgun Training Class: What Can You Expect To Learn?

New gun owners need good instruction. Unfortunately, there are good handgun training classes, and there are others that are not good. In various ways a new shooter can't recognize, these inadequate classes cut corners on essential information. This is a dangerous practice! This isn't a dance class, where the worst thing that can happen is that you step on someone's toes; it's an educational beginning for using a lethal weapon.I'm an NRA Certified Firearms Instructor. I've been shooting for much of my life. My first formal handgun class, about 20 years ago, was excellent. The instructor was an expert in what he was teaching. He hammered the things we needed and drilled us on the range.That first class was tremendously informative and helpful. So much so that I repeated it a few years ago. And later, after taking additional classes and getting my NRA instructor certification, I talked with another instructor at a gun show, and I wondered how truthful he was being about his classes. I became curious about the overall quality of other handgun classes in my area. Were all gun classes as good as the one I'd taken at first, or not? Had I just "gotten lucky" and assumed a general level of quality that wasn't really there? It turned out, the answer was "yes."I went "underground" - became sort of a "secret shopper," and took a number of basic handgun classes at my own expense. In the last two or three years, I've concentrated on classes that claim they will "teach a beginning shooter all of the necessary fundamentals of shooting and get their concealed handgun permit." In my state, Colorado (and most others), these classes are often taught by an NRA Certified Instructor, and (in applicable States) they can issue a certificate allowing the new shooter to apply for a concealed handgun permit. With that permit, the shooter can legally carry a concealed handgun, subject to certain restrictions. (The class completion certificate signed by an NRA Certified Instructor, and fees for administrative handling and background checks, are all that's required to apply for the permit. In my State, Colorado, the student is not required to actually fire a gun or show competency in order to obtain a Concealed Handgun Permit.)You would hope that these classes would all teach at least the minimum of gun knowledge needed, wouldn't you? They would drill a certain amount of live-fire practice, and turn out new or re-educated shooters who can carry a concealed handgun and at least use it safely, legally and ethically if they are forced to defend themselves or others. Wouldn't you expect that?What I found out will shock you, and it is information you really need before taking your first handgun class.
