You Did Nothing Wrong

Dark domestic suspense meets haunted house horror in this unnerving adult debut guaranteed to keep you awake for days afterward, from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Don't Let the Forest In and Hazelthorn

The walls are closing in on her perfect new life.

Single mother Elodie's life has become a fairy tale. She's met Bren, equal parts Golden-retriever-devoted and sinfully handsome. He's whisked her and her autistic son, Jude, to the crumbling family house he's renovating. She has a new husband, a new house, and a new baby on the way. Everything is perfect.

Until Jude claims he can hear voices in the walls. He says their renovations are "hurting" the house. Even Elodie can't ignore it―something strange is going on.

The question is, Is it with the house, or with her son?

And what is Elodie hiding?

"A masterpiece." - Ava Reid

The price of motherhood

This was a visceral novel with teeth that will rip into your mind and never let go. The disturbing imagery of descriptions of the house, and what Elodie thinks it is doing to her and her son, plus her own thoughts makes this a great psychological horror. And that makes it plausible to believe both that there might a supernatural element at play in the house but also could be the unraveling of Elodie with her dark secrets and unwillingness to let Jude grow up and leave her. You can certainly feel the anxiety oozing of the pages and while some of it might be understandable, with a pregnancy, a child has meltdowns and is overwhelmed so easily (symptoms of autism, but maybe something else), moving to a new country, and also being in the middle of house renovation that never seems to be ending, there is an unexplainable element and secrets held by everyone. The inner monologue of Elodie really adds to the creepiness with her visceral thoughts and the unraveling reasonableness which echo the pain of the house (or is it all in her head?). A dark tale of the price of motherhood, what she will do for her children, and how the mind can change and twist to fit the reality they want. It was not an easy read but it kept me hooked till that shocking ending which I did not guess but it made everything make sense. I am glad I got the chance to discover this twisted tale.
