Great Fiction

Yesterday’s Tides by Roseanna M. White is a stand-alone novel. Set in two time frames; it’s the stories of two very courageous resilient women! Louisa Adair’s story is set in 1914 during the first world war. She falls in love with an Englishman who is visiting her quaint little island inn during the summer. In 1942, Evie Farrow falls in love with a man who washes up on her beach. The stories were a little hard to keep straight since people from both time periods were in both segments, but I really enjoyed getting to know LuLu and Evie. They were both strong, independent girls with lots of fortitude to face life’s hardships! I received this book from the author for my honest review.

An exquisite read!

This split-time novel was sweet agony as the story came together piece by clever piece, and I so enjoyed every page! I've never read a split-time that was split between the two World Wars - so close together - and at first I wondered if they would be two close to distinguish one from the other. I shouldn't have worried. The book soon becomes less about the two eras as I was swept away by the stories of the people who lived in them. The tenderness in this book is balanced well with secrets, betrayal, hope, and sorrow, and the characters soon become your friends as you laugh, cry, rage, and wonder alongside them. I highly recommend moving this to the top of your TBR pile (because don't we all have one of those?). Gripping and full of charm, this is a must read! [I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to provide a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.]

Time slip that ties it all together

As a stand alone it’s such a lovely view of really hard topics; but I don’t consider it a standalone because I’ve read all the books leading up to it. This truly is a culmination and connecting book between America, France, and England in both world wars. It also connects many of Roseanna’s characters from the Civil war through her room 40 WWI books. There’s something masterful about an author who sees her characters in such a real way, and uses sensitivity readers for racism and for what men think. Probably why my husband, teen son, and teen daughter love reading them with me. I’ve read nearly 700 books in the past 3 years (semi bedrest and bedrest has one perk), and I’ve purchased maybe 75 of those in hard copy or digital form. I have all but the Isle books (wishlist), and they’re signed and dedicated to my husband (because Roseanna’s one of his favorite authors & we refer to the characters like they’re real too). When I was offered to be a part of the launch team I was delighted, though it’s our first non-signed book from Roseanna because it came straight from the publisher. So worth it. I received it on Friday and finished it before my interview on IG with Roseanna on Saturday morning. Talk about a pager turner, Wow! If all authors wrote time slips like this more people would enjoy hopping time. Don’t get me wrong, she made my heart race and my concern for the welfare of the characters way too much. I swear she loves to give me a bit of emotional whiplash…which she smilingly confirmed on that IG interview. I don’t know how she still puts surprises in her books, many authors become predictable but this just isn’t the case with Roseanna M. White, and I love it. The nice thing about being a part of the launch team was that I get to give an honest review, no requirement for it to be a positive one, (Roseanna prefers honesty anyway), so all of this includes my own expressed opinions. Yup, mine alone, because I haven’t read it aloud to my husband yet. He has to read the civil the war book first. I did receive a complimentary copy of Yesterday’s Tides so I could read it, but I would have purchased it anyway…and I’m tempted to give this copy to our teen son (who also loves her books) and get a signed copy for myself. The villains are complicated, which I love. One reminds me of one of Jane Austen’s characters in a book I rather detest and will probably never read again. I’m a big discourager of narcissism, so reading characters who are that way makes me nauseated and then I just want to pray for them. In these books Christianity is present, and prayer is just part of it. This book is a strong reminder to me to stop judging, even the “bad guys,” because we’re all God’s children and He sees the complications of our souls. It also reminds me to be less selfish and be mindful of my children’s futures and their need to find their own paths. You’ll love it, no matter what, but you’ll feel connected to it so much more if you read the others first. I didn’t realize this until I read other reviews and saw how I was so blessed to know who Barclay was (absolute favorite character in my house, we refer to the Shadows over England and the Codebreakers series as the Barclay books), and even noticed a cameo of Sheridan in the Secret of the Isles series. Start with Circle of Spies, Ladies of the Manor, and then add on the other three series. So worth the journey, and then all the appearances will feel like Easter eggs! If you like to read before you buy (like me), request the books at your library. Happy reading!

riveting historical fiction

"Because she'd always known that 'safety' was an illusion. And 'steady' too often meant stagnant. Neither was what brought life, with all its abundant, chaotic beauty." Absolutely stunning dual timeline historical fiction. Once again, Roseanna M White masterfully and beautifully combines history, intrigue, romance, and faith to weave an unforgettable tale of secrets, loss, grief, strength, and love. The setting of Ocracoke Island is lovely and the plot that takes us from the Outer Banks to England to France is riveting. Louisa and Rem from WWI stole my heart completely from the beginning. Their romance and steadfast love were delightful and heartbreaking at the same time. Evie and Sterling from WWII took their time to get to know each other and I truly enjoyed that journey. There were plenty of gasp-worthy surprises and plot twists to keep the book moving at a good pace. Revisiting Room 40 from The Codebreakers series was quite fun, as was cameo appearances by characters from the author's other books. It's a must read for all historical fiction lovers. I received the book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.
