Something for Everyone

This book is so amazing. No matter who you are you can relate to the charactors. High School is only four years long and those years are so influential. Great job David Marlow on yet another page turner.

Hilarious,Endearing,Heart Breaking

If you've been to high school, you will know the characters in YEARBOOK. The decades may come and go ,but the icons we loved to hate (or love) appear and reappear: the preternaturally handsome football star and his equally flawless cheerleader girlfriend; the brainy, underdeveloped nerd and his ungainly female counterpart;the brains and the jocks, the cats and the frats, the hangers-on and the wannabes. Add the hormonal sexuality and its peccadilloes, the colossal social gaffes and end of the world embarrassments, and your yearbook, well everyone's yearbook, comes alive; all yearbooks that is, but especially the finely wrought YEARBOOK of David Marlow. The characters in Marlow's book are a romp, by quicksilver turns both hilarious and poignant. By the end of the novel,when you have begun to care about, if not love them,you would need a heart of stone to remain unmoved as life takes its ghastly toll. The iconic cheerleader in my high school lost an arm in an automobile accident and later drank herself to death. To find out what happens to Marlow's benighted and endearing crew you will have to do what I did, read the book. YEARBOOK is so riven with the energy of real lives fully lived that you may well find yourself forging ahead into the wee hours to get to its bittersweet conclusion.

Yearbook erzählt die Geschichte von einigen High-School-Schülern in den 50er Jahren. Es klingt wie ein typischer Teeny Film aus den USA: schöne Cheerleaderin ist mit dem beliebtesten Footballspieler und Helden der Schule zusammen - das Traumpaar. Nach außen hin scheint deren Welt perfekt - aber insgeheim haben auch sie einen Kampf auszustehen. Alle bewundern Ro-Anne und Corky und wollen von ihnen akzeptiert und gemocht werden. Da ist auch Guy nicht anders, der ja nicht mal von seinen eigenen Geschwistern akzeptiert wird - wie soll er da bloß an Corky rankommen? Er zählt zu den typischen Aussenseitern, da er nicht gutaussehend, sportlich und erfolgreich ist. Genauso geht es Amy, über die ständig gelacht wird, weil sie für ein Mädchen viel zu groß ist, Pickel hat, eine Zahnspange und eine auffällige Nase. Sie scheint sich jedoch keineswegs für die beliebten Schüler zu interessieren, ganz im Gegenteil - sie verachtet sie aus verständlichen Gründen. Aber wer hätte gedacht, dass gerade Amy ebenfalls dem Charme des Footballspielers nicht widerstehen kann? So hat jeder seine Probleme im Teenager-Alter zu bewältigen... 5 Jahre später trifft sich die Abschlußklasse von 1959 zur class-reunion wieder- und alles ist anders. Was anders ist und warum, ist die Geschichte von YEARBOOK. Witzig aber auch bissig geschrieben - sehr interessant zu lesen.
