Y is for Yellowhammer

I just purchased this book intending it for my grandchildren. However, I love it. I lived in Alabama all my life and there were tidbits that I didn't know. Beautifully illustrated and interesting information. Both of my children live in other states now and I will send each of them a copy of the Alabama book.

A summary of Alabama

Y Is For Yellowhammer is another book in the Discover America State By State Alphabet Series. This one is written by Carol Crane and illustrated by Ted Burn. The editors suggest an age range of 4-8. This surprises me, because I think older readers will also enjoy it. Perhaps the greatest satisfaction will come from an adult reading it to a youngster, or vice versa! In this book, a "yellowhammer" is a flicker, a type of woodpecker. Author Crane ties this bird into the history of the state, along with Rosa Parks, the boll weevil, and Helen Keller. Like other books in this series, this one is bound to ignore one or two of your favorite people, places, or actions. But there are only 26 letters in the alphabet! This book would make a nice gift.

A Must Have For Every Classroom and Home Library!

I recently observed this book being read to a fourth grade class. The students loved it. It was educational and sparked a lot of very good questions. Every page has additional info on side panel. This book could be incorporated into all grades.
