With some java background, using XML Complete to learn XML is not a bad idea. The programs are well written. I do have some compilation errors with some of the programs; but with a little fix you're good to go.
This book is GREAT

For those of you out there looking for a good place to start off at an entry-level position with XML and learn from there, this is the book for you. Or if you don't have that much experience with JAVA, or HTML, this book is also a great help. It is a little redundant and oversimplified for the Web Guru/Super Webmaster type, but for the average guy looking for the right place to start, look here.
The best XML book thus far

This book covers all the necessary areas of XML needed to understand electronic data exchange. The use of Java for the examples is a good choice and is well done. The breakdown of Microsoft's XML Parser is both concise and useful. The breakdown of XML, CSS and DTD is laid out well for the reader. The explanations are clear and the lingo is not too heavy. Overall, the bestbook on XML I have seen yet (and I've seen most of them). On the downside, it would have been nice to include the XML parser from Microsoft, but perhaps licensing issues caused this to be. You can download it easily enough though, so don't fret.
Not that great

Not very good. Lots of repetitive code, and included a review of Java, which I don't think many people would be interested in at this stage. Used too much description of the basic algorithms used in the code, rather than on XML itself. the first few books out the gate on a new subject are often not that good. Seems like this one proves the rule.
