Among the different races and ethnic groups, Nestorian, Catholic and Protestant Christianity influenced the history of this region as they spread from the 5th century AD. These denominations of Christianity were, however, in competition with Zoroastrianism since the 5th century BC, Buddhism since the 1st century BC, Manichaeism since the 7th century AD, Islam since the 10th Century, Tibetan Yellow Lamaism since the 17th century, and Communism since 1949.
