'Wyatt's Weird World'
In my infancy, at the beginning of the 1960s, I lived with my family in a converted factory workshop on the derelict site of what was known locally as 'the old factory.' This wasn't just any old factory, from the 15th Century to the 1920s it had been a gunpowder mill producing deadly explosive products. It was there, well, near there, that my dad had an eerie, traumatic experience, and that was the initial spark that got me interested in the supernatural. That word 'spark' was carefully chosen, and you will see why later.
All the other stories in this book are about my own experiences. I initially began this project merely as writing practice, to get me into writing regularly. I needed a topic, and it needed to be something that I had an interest in, and pretty soon I decided to try to recall, to put in writing, every strange thing that I had ever experienced. I was around fifty years old at the time, and could still remember many odd encounters and experiences from way back, but it was still quite an undertaking, and, to this day, long after the book was first published, I still occasionally remember weird events that should have been included in this book Writing out my experiences often jogged my memory about other, almost forgotten happenings, and it also became a kind of therapy to re-appraise the strange things that I had experienced.
I gave a friend, Maurice, sadly passed away now, some of my paranormal memoirs, he told me that he enjoyed my 'engaging writing style and humor' (his words, not mine) and then enthusiastically suggested that I should publish it as a 'real' book. I should also point out here that an online American friend, Steve Stockton, who had talked about his own paranormal memories on various paranormal podcasts around that time, was also a great inspiration. At first, I was a little reluctant to publish this personal paranormal project as a book, as I had come from a background where such things were rarely, if ever, discussed, even my dad, despite having had at least one obvious paranormal experience, wasn't particularly interested in the paranormal. Most, if not all of my family and friends at that time, either had no interest in the paranormal, or were skeptical of paranormal claims, or both. However, I did have another open-minded friend, an American lady, and she wasn't taking 'No' for an answer, she said something like, 'This isn't about getting approval from your skeptical family and friends, we're well into the 21st century now, and mainstream science is slowly catching up with us. This book will be about YOU, and it might help you, and others who read it, come out of the paranormal closet that you've been hiding in ' With her enthusiastic encouragement still ringing in my ears, I finally decided to take the plunge into full personal paranormal disclosure, to announce, in public, on podcasts, and in print, to anyone who was interested, that I'd experienced many odd, unexplainable things in my life, and that this weird stuff was, as far as I was concerned, very, very real.
I definitely stepped out of my self-imposed paranormal closet when I published 'Wyatt's Weird World.' I have spoken at conferences in England and the United States of America, and have discussed this weird stuff with other paranormal enthusiasts all over the world on at least 70 paranormal/philosophy/folklore style podcasts.
I am into my early 60s now, mostly living in the USA, where I have continued to experience occasional weird events in various locations, many times with fellow witnesses, this stuff has a tendency to follow us around, but as I have said before, 'If you show an interest in the paranormal it will show an interest in you.'
Well, the paranormal certainly shows no signs of losing interest in me, so perhaps there might be a 'Wyatt's Weird World 2' one day. Watch this space, and I hope you enjoy my paranormal confessional
