Lt. Paul F. Kisak Sr. enlisted in the USAAF on October of 1942 and worked his way up to the rank of Lieutenant & Flight Officer-Bombardier-Navigator. Lt. Kisak was stationed at the US Amendola Air Base, in Foggia Italy with the 15th USAAF, 20th Bomb Squadron, 2nd Bomb Group. The crews had completed 12 successful bomb runs. On 23 March 1945, B-17 (" Big Stuff ") a/c #44-6452, was on its 12th Mission (#384), and bombed a benzene, oil refinery factory in Rhuland, Germany at 12:20 pm and at an altitude of 28,000 feet. At approximately 12:40 in the afternoon B-17 "Big Stuff" was struck by a considerable amount of flak and fire from German ME-262's. "Two engines were knocked out immediately" and their B-17 "Big Stuff," headed for a 'wheels up' crash landing near Russian lines at the co-ordinates of 50 deg. 15 min North, 14 deg. 15 min East over Lovosice, Germany. Lt. Kisak served as navigator and their B-17 was shot down over Kety, Poland whereupon the crew was reported as MIA and later POW. The last contact or transmission was with left-waist gunner Russell H. Johnson and he stated "Here we go again." No chutes were seen. The crew was captured, detained, tortured and interrogated by the Russians who were supposedly our allies.
