WWII Aircraft Carriers: Illustrated This is a much bigger subject than I imagined when I began the book. I decided to focus on the illustrations and leave the specifications and details of construction to others. I tried to show the defensive weapons at their actual locations as much as possible to give the reader a good idea how well defended the ships were during the war. In spite of this, many times torpedo aircraft and dive bombers were able to deliver ordnance on target and lived to tell about it. Needless to say, approaching an enemy carrier with malicious intent was extremely hazardous and they didn't have standoff weapons like today.
