John was a storyteller. I loved his stories. When we were in the car on a road trip, I'd say, "Tell me again about your mother and how she made all those cookies at Christmastime for the workers in the Windsor Post Office," and that would set him off onto that story and then another one. Eventually I started saying, "John, you've got to write that down!" The time came when he began to read his stories aloud to our local literary group, Writer's On The Edge. There was a five-minute time limit on read-alouds so most of these stories are not very long. After he died, I began to gather his stories together. The original place for these was to be included in my/our book The Peaceable Kingdom of South Beach, Oregon and that is still the case, but I put this smaller collection together as a Christmas present for some of the people who loved or admired John. Settle down with a cup of coffee, tea, or cocoa and travel once more with John through these vignettes of time gone by, some in the small Midwestern town of Windsor, Missouri, beginning in the 1940s to his later time in Newport, Oregon.
