Part of the Longman Topics reader series, Writing Places encourages students to examine the locations that define their past, present and future. As students begin to think critically and to write about these places, they realize that location is an enormous part of identity -- both personally and academically.
i go to holy cross in worcester, massachusetts and my teacher is one of the compilers of this book. we read from it all the time, sharing with each other what we think the strong and weak points of each essay are. our teacher is honest with us in the fact that none of these essays are perfect. he took part in the editing of many of them and knows for a fact that there are things the authors (most are students, some are pro's) could have done better. however, every one of these essays are in this book because they are teachable. while thye may not be perfect, that is part of their value. their imperfections allow student and teacher alike to analyze the essay in a hands-on way that eliminates much of the distance usually found between a student and a text. would recommend to all, plus i think my teacher said any money he makes on the book is going to charity.
