"Writing Content, Mastering Magazine and Online Writing" -Fool-proof secrets from a master

Apart from "The Elements of Style," "Writing Content" is the must-have book on every writer's shelf. Roger W. Nielsen not only provides a "great resource guide to writing clear, concise and credible magazine articles and online content," but he also packs a powerful punch when it comes to selling articles. Even a seasoned professional like myself gleaned an eye-opening insider's view of the trade publications market. As far as selling, Chapter 5, Writing Queries, too, covers it all. Mr. Nielsen's personal six-component template for query letters to editors gave me a chuckle. Simple? Definitely! Effective? Absolutely. Forget the books written solely about query letters; Mr. Nielsen sums it up in one chapter. I also identified with his interview technique. I knew it was lo-ooong, but did not realize that transcribing a tape takes four hours for every one-hour recorded; which, in essence, illustrates another point about Mr. Nielsen's prose. His writing is thorough, precise and leaves nothing to the imagination. But don't for a split second think that all that meaty content that he slices in, page after page, tires the mind. His vibrant, succinct prose and insightful humor allows the reader to read without necessitating a caffeine-fix break with each break of the page. To illustrate one instance of humor that is super-charged with practical information that has even permanently affected a stick-in-the-mud person like myself is when he writes "....I am not part of Generation X. I am a crotchety 60-year-old who has spent 40 years putting words on paper. I find it highly insulting for a beginning writer whom I have just met to call me by my first name, refer to me as dude, or call me by my nickname, which only my friends have permission to use. Call me Mr. Nielsen. Otherwise, I won't even read your e-mail, dude." Whether writing about the mechanics of writing or writer's etiquette or selling your work, the author holds nothing back. If you want to become a master in the craft--follow the master; this guru's got knowledge and pizzazz. Essential read for wannabe magazine & e-content writers

Writing Content is the perfect primer for novice writers interested in fundamentals for magazine and online article submission, as well as an essential resource for experienced writers who seek to update or enhance their skills. The chapters on writing for the Internet--the shift in electronic communications and its impact on writing--were valuable and thorough, i.e., our love affair with technology, writing "spider-friendly" e-content, and the importance of cultivating an on-line presence. Author Nielsen, a veteran writer, editor and publisher, overall presents a nicely organized, concisely-written treatise on developing the right ideas, cultivating ideas, doing research and "due diligence," targeting appropriate publications with relevant audiences, selecting forms of articles, and so on. Useful anecdotes from his professional life as a journalist are blended with detailed information to make the book more readable (and enjoyable) than a technical book. The chapter on writing queries is especially relevant and useful, since the advice is offered from a publisher's point of view. A few chapters are dedicated to basic writing tutorial for beginners, as well. Especially useful are tips on using quotes and anecdotes, and writing transitions.

Writing Content-Mastering Magazine And Online Writing

Roger W. Nielsen has created a 4-step process to guide us in our writing on the Internet and also for article writing in magazines. This is exactly the type of assistance that I have personally been looking for as my ventures on the Internet keep moving me more and more into the writing field. This is an incredible resource for everyone. He has gathered up all of his knowledge of 40 years in the writing, editing and publishing magazine and online content and made it simple and easy for us to understand. Roger also has provided that "extra insite" of being on the other side of the desk receiving all of our written articles and making the judgement of whether your article will be accepted or rejected. One area that caught my attention was in Chapter 4 on page 43 titled "Doing Due Diligence." Roger will prepare you to start your research in the Library and how simple to do is that! Do you want to submit a manuscript, read Page 157, "Writer Etiquette"; it is all there for you. I would highly recommend this book to all who want to write professionally and also improve their writing skills.
