Excellent reference for traditional book reviews
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 20 years ago
This book was last revised in 1974. It is an excellent tutorial on authoring book reviews of the traditional sort. John Drewry was the Dean of the University of Georgia School of Journalism and his old-school attitudes show, much to the delight of any reader who has become intolerant of the unbridled political partisanship that seems to have become part of so many reviews in the past few years. Drewry begins by asking what is a book review, a question many reviewers seem never to consider. He then moves on to the technique of reviewing and provides guides and examples for reviewing fiction, biography and other genre. His text includes many examples from decades old reviews. These fine examples provoke nostalgia for an era when intelligent discussion did not mean two or more people screaming at each other on television. Half or more of the pages are given to appendices that are very dated. Overall, "Writing Book Reviews" is a treat. There is much useful information for the person who wants to produce intelligent and intelligible book reviews. At its current price, though, one might think first of seeing if their current library has a copy. Jerry
