This accumulation of stories was written over a span of forty years. The early ones were actually included in rejected love letters which I wrote to A.O. when I ran out of things to say. Years later she called to ask my permission to donate the whole lot of them to Columbia University to be included in some sort of time capsule. Whether or not she finally did... well, I fancy that it's so.
