A great resource for world travelers

This book is a compact, quickie guide to over 40 languages, with basics on learning quickly how to communicate and providing essential words and phrases that are the building blocks of the particular language. It's small and light enough to carry around in a day pack or even in a large pocket, yet it provides a wealth of info.It's designed to help you communicate, not to know grammar, which is how most good English as a Second Language teachers work. The idea is to get across the essentials so you can start communicating right away. The author stresses that this is no substitute for language tapes and practice, so it's not a panacea. However, it will help you see how different languages tie together and how many words you already know just require some tweaking in a new language. Great for travelers, hosts, and international businesspeople

What I especially like about this book is that it hits just the right middle ground. On the one hand, it's not trying to be a language course, per se, and it's simple enough to get you the basics of making yourself understood in every major language in the world. On the other hand, it doesn't stop at just being a phrase book. The 40 pages or so of intro are a great short course in learning languages the quick & easy way from someone with the credential to back it up.I also like the pocket-size format for this book. Even at 250 pages or so, it easily fits in a jacket or even a hip pocket. Whether you're a world traveler, a host to international guests, an EFL teacher, or you do a lot of international business, this book will come in handy either in your pocket or on your desk.

Extremely useful resource for the business person/traveller

A relative bought me this book for Xmas this year and I am so happy she did. I have found this title to be extremely useful in my day-to-day business activities. I serve as an executive director of a chamber of commerce in Miami-Dade and operate as a licensed customs broker as well. For those involved in international business or travel this is a MUST HAVE! This book may give your high school Spanish teacher fits. Very helpful for travelers

I picked up this book at a bookstore before I recently went on a trip to China and Russia and it was incredibly helpful. The people in both countries were very appreciative of my attempts to speak their language and the book must be right because it got me what I wanted.The Spanish language section is fantastic! I already speak Spanish from some time in Central/South America and this guy really knows his stuff.If you are going to more than one country on a trip, this book is indispensible. If you're going to a Spanish-speaking country, you need this book.
