World Wars to Playground Spats

Dav Pilkey's book World War Won is a wonderful tale of two characters who want to be king of the same land. They previously had been friends, but the struggle for power pits them against one another. They begin to build arsenals, then find themselves in jeopardy. The reader sees the first nuclear freeze. The adversaries then are given invaluable advice by the great bear: "It's nice to have power and good to be strong, but threatening each other is certainly wrong..." Every year when I read this to my elementary-aged students, I rave so about how good it is that it is the most frequently stolen book in my library! I hope that it is reprinted again soon. Now, more than ever, we need to teach children non-violent methods to problem solve personal differences.

Still My Favorite Book

I was in fourth grade when this book came out and Dav Pilkey came to visit my school. I loved it from the moment he began to read the first page. Not only is it hilariously entertaining and extremely clever, but it delivers an important message to today's children. As a political science major, I keep some of the book's closing thoughts at my desk to keep me grounded... "It's nice to have power and good to be strong, but threatening each other is certainly wrong. A powerful mind is good for a start, but you also need wisdom and love in your heart. And when you use all of these things as a guide, you can take your differences and lay them aside." -- Old Bear in World War Won
