In 1918, Ralph, a 24-year-old auto mechanic raised on a farm at Modesto, Illinois, went off to World War I in the Engineer Corp. His wife, Myrtle, saved his letters home in an old, red cardboard box with a green top.
That box of letters remained with Myrtle's descendants. In 2021, the WWI letters of 1918 and 1919 were transcribed into this volume. They present a unique view of life during the War from a Master Engineer who left the farm and his auto repair garage to see a wider world. Upon his return, he never spoke of The War nor attended a veterans reunion. He did speak of The Depression. Speaking of it didn't make any difference.Related Subjects
