Kathleen Mary Fallon's writing is gloriously raunchy, hilarious and clever. It is very experimental and difficultly structured, which makes it heavy going at times, as I had to back-pedal more than once to make sure I understood what was going on. However, it was all absolutely worth the effort, as the writing itself is incisively good, and all the references to landmarks (and lesser known terrain) in Sydney, Australia definitely struck a chord with me. This book has an unmistakably Australian flavour and sense of humour. It is loaded with lesbian sex romps (of the warts-and-all variety), which are handled distastefully and explicitly, but with humour all the while. There are plenty of heated arguments between lovers 'Freda' and 'Toto' (with commentary by narrator 'E.C.R Saidthandone), as well as tender, intimate moments which momentarily temper the author's ironic humour. It should be noted that Kathleen Mary Fallon uses very little punctuation at all in her experimental novel, which is very effective, but occasionally exasperating. Kathleen quotes writers and other famous and non-famous people liberally throughout the book. She explores the dynamics of the lesbian relationship in a patriarchal society, as she interrogates social norms like marriage and education. Her feminist perspective manifests itself ironically, in comments like "I believe men see woman's body as a hole with a smile on top." Her wit is unrelenting and refreshing. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone looking for something a bit different.
