John Hilton is a poet, author and painter who lived most of his life in Bristol before moving to Bath in late 2020. He has published many volumes of poetry, two novels and four collections of shorter fiction among other works.

He is a prolific poet whose works embraces directness of expression, moral and subjective ambiguity and a distinctive diction and sense of form. Words is a generously filled anthology of four poetry collections that began in July 2016 with the publication of Words on Paper and concluded in October 2020 with appearance of The Using of Words. Together with the expanded version of the powerful, book length poem "Significance", it represents a substantial body of work that encompasses many moods and voices.
