While the word asylum means safe space, it has historically been used to describe those foreboding places cultures use to lock away those that are to different, to eccentric, to fit into the narrow parameters of "normal." The mentally ill were once thought to be possessed by demons, and asylums were managed by religious authority. The visions of saints and martyrs were denied in their own times, only recognized as revelation by those who came after. Their words out of asylum were prophetic visions.
