Book Overview

An insightful collection of wisdom, tradition, and vision from the heart of Native America.Words of Power: Voices from Indian America is a moving anthology that gathers the insights and reflections of tribal members on the fundamental pillars of human existence. Edited by Norbert S. Hill Jr. (Oneida), this collection serves as a bridge between ancestral wisdom and contemporary life, offering a powerful look at the values that continue to shape Indigenous communities today.Spanning a wide range of essential themes, these voices provide deep perspective on: Spirituality and Peace: The sacred connection between the individual, the community, and the Great Spirit. The Land and Environment: Traditional ecological knowledge and the enduring responsibility to protect the natural world.Leadership and Conflict: Philosophical approaches to governance, treaties, and the pursuit of justice.Family and Education: The vital roles of men, women, and children in preserving culture and ensuring a bright future through learning.Whether you are seeking spiritual inspiration, a deeper understanding of Native American philosophy, or a more authentic connection to the land, Words of Power offers timeless truths from the original stewards of the American landscape. It is a compact but essential volume for educators, students, and anyone moved by the power of the spoken and written word.

introspective of Native American values

I found this book while looking for material for a Native American literature/cultural unit. In a collection of aphorisms grouped by category (values, land and environment, women and men, etc.), it offers nuggets in the goldmine of Native American beliefs. Having read it, I feel I do better understand the values of Native Americans. The "voices" from the 1800s to today speak softly but eloquently of the need for harmony with nature, with each other. On a practical note, this book is great for busy people; I think it is best appreciated if read in small increments, taking time to think about what the "speaker" has said.
