In the era before spell checkers.

This book is of its time and made a gallant attempt at correcting 23,000 words in the English language. Luckily, it is the U.S. English language. Being well-focused, it is not like a dictionary and has made space to explain the spelling or its history. The one fatal flaw is that it cannot consider many mispronounced words that cannot be corrected even with spell it as it sounds. Today’s spell checkers try to figure out what you mean by context. It is still useful if you cannot reach a terminal of some sort.
