This anthology comes from a poetry-inspired art event called Words Come to Life. The birth of this event was in the year 2016 in Bakersfield, CA. A vision came to life. Project Director, Diana Ramirez, asked writers to create poems on the theme of deserted. Once those poems were completed, she gave the poems to various artists. Those artists gained inspiration from those poems to create their art pieces. Words Come to Life! The night the poetry and artworks were exhibited, spoken word and live music also came alive. The goal of this event is to unite and connect to other artists and to the community. This event serves to raise money to create workshops in art, poetry, spoken word, and music for at-risk youth. By giving youth a positive outlet, we allow them to uniquely display their works of art. We want to build confidence and encourage youth to share their stories and creativity. A couple of poems in this book were written by at-risk youth and a couple of art pieces were created by at-risk youth. We do not disclose who is an at-risk youth--we want them to feel that they have contributed equally just as the other artists involved. For the event in 2017, we had writers from Kern Valley State Prison contribute their poetry. Another way we make connections and inspire throughout our community no matter the circumstances.
