Life behind the Iron Curtain re-imagined in 23rd Century America

In *Woodland of Weir*, Russian author Nikolai Dejevsky draws from his life experience of living in Soviet Russia during the Cold War to imagine a future America trying to recover from environmental disaster and the partial collapse of modern civilization. In central Maine, deep in the Northeastern Zone beyond the borders of "civilized" New United States of America, exists the Woodland of Weir where the dictatorship masquerading as a democratic government cannot reach. This wild land also harbors the remnants of technology from the past, and the government needs to mine this technology, which it has become dependent upon; so it must send expeditions into the heart of the darkness... and sometimes they don't come back. >>>>>>><<<<<<< <br /> <br />A Guide to my Rating System: <br /> <br />1 star = The wood pulp would have been better utilized as toilet paper. <br />2 stars = Don't bother, clean your bathroom instead. <br />3 stars = Wasn't a waste of time, but it was time wasted. <br />4 stars = Good book, but not life altering. <br />5 stars = This book changed my world in at least some small way.

A bit of a page-turner

Nikolai Dejevsky has written a gripping, gloomy, thought-provoking novel about what life would be like in the USA in 2276AD after two centuries of environmental catastrophe and social upheaval. In a society akin to Orwell's "1984", an all powerful elite rules what is left of "civilised" USA. A team of experts sent to explore an area beyond accepted civilisation is shocked to find a sophisticated remnant of people living an acceptable lifestyle. A number of the team turn against the old order. Although the world depicted by Dejevsky is bleak, the story is an optimistic one (unlike "1984"). The book is grippingly told, and the reader is left keen to know what happens next. Well worth getting if you enjoy reading about visions of the future.
