The Invitation

Ace stood at the foot of a sprawling mansion, its stone fa ade

gleaming in the moonlight, casting long shadows across the

manicured lawn. The air around her buzzed with an electric

hum, as if the night itself was holding its breath. She had arrived.

The invitation had come in the most unexpected of ways-

a simple envelope, its deep gold lining reflecting the light of

the streetlamp that stood outside her apartment building. No

return address, just a single sentence inscribed on the inside:

You are needed. Come
