Women in Methodism The part played by women in Methodism can hardly be over emphasised, though that emphasis varied in different periods in history as both the denomination developed and the social perception of the role of women altered. This study considers some of the women [approximately 200 are mentioned] and the roles they played in the making of Methodism. The book covers the formative years from 'The Mother of Methodism' through to twentieth century developments. It considers some of the key early women, Band and Class Leaders, Hospitality and Invitations aiding the spread of Methodism and early social work including sick and prison visiting. The importance of education in Methodism is explored and various girls' schools that were set up are included before moving on to a number of specific women with an 'extraordinary call', women preachers in the non-Wesleyan Connexions, the wives of itinerants, women local preachers, specialist organizations such as The Joyful News Mission and the Deaconess Orders, women in overseas work and debates on the role of women in the Church/Ministry until we arrive at the position today. . Author's Note It is important to emphasise that this project is chiefly a 'gathering together' of material from many sources rather than original research. The hope is that readers will find it helpful in tracking down subjects of specific interest to their own research, obviously much more could be added in all the areas covered. Starting with Susanna Wesley and her influence in so many ways during the early years it has been a fascinating journey trawling through various documents to look for and at the involvement of women in the various branches and areas of Methodism. In many cases it was the strong faith and determination of the women themselves which pushed the barriers to achieve parity with men. It took time for this to become the norm as in a male dominated era the thought of women being permitted to have equality in the areas of gender, pay, and eventually status in the higher realms of the church's governance, was unthinkable, but in the end became inevitable. Much still needs to be explored, both in Methodism's past history and the Church of today to ensure that women are used and accepted equally throughout all aspects of church life. Other publications by Dr E. Dorothy Graham Her many publications are listed in the book and include: - Chosen by God: A list of the Female Travelling Preachers of Early Primitive Methodism (1989; enlarged edition 2010); and - Saved to Serve: The Story of the Wesley Deaconess Order 1890-1978 (2002).
