INTRODUCTION
Women's roles within families, both work and child care have varied a great deal
over time. In ancient days, most people lived on farms or in small villages.
The family was the basic economic and production unit. Family and other household
members worked together to produce goods for their own consumption, and at times
for the consumption of others. The most common employment for families was
agriculture.
Family agriculture meant much the same kind of work for women as it did for men.
While specific tasks might be gender-related, the idea that women were responsible
for a part of the family's economic well-being was common.
