Reading the genealogy of Christ in the gospel of Matthew (Matthew 1), four women were curiously mentioned, two of them, Rahab, and Ruth (the subjects of this book), a third, Tamar, the daughter-in-law of Judah, who supposedly played the harlot and conceived a child for Judah, the clever father-in-law. And finally, Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah the Hittite, a most loyal soldier to King David, who was brutally murdered by the King's command for selfish, adulterous reasons.
What amazes me each time I visit those verses of Scripture is the strangeness with which these four names stand out in a genealogy which would mention the fifth woman, Mary, the virgin, and mother of Jesus in passing, as it were.
