Book Overview

Recipient of the Equal Opportunity for Women Innovation Award of the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business "The book is most useful for a broad exposure to a range of gender issues, from sex segregation in the workplace to gender socialization." --Cultural Diversity at Work "The author does an excellent job of summarizing recent research challenging some longstanding, traditional beliefs concerning sex differences in intellectual skills and social behavior. . . . This second edition of Women & Men in Management is well done and provides a very informative, yet concise, reference for those hoping to gain a better understanding of the issues facing women in organizations today. I would recommend it to academics as well as to practicing managers. . . . I would also highly recommend the book to human resource professionals who may be charged with developing policies and training programs concerned with women in the workplace. The book provides a comprehensive look at the issues women face in the workplace and the associated challenges and opportunities confronting organizations and managers." --Personnel Psychology "The second edition of Powell′s Women & Men in Management is an insightful, well-researched volume that does an excellent job of presenting gender issues in the workplace and discussing practical implications for women and men working together. It] is a ′must read′ for academics and practitioners alike." Cheryl L. Adkins, Louisiana State University "The best text in the field on the topic. A must read for academics, practitioners, and policymakers." --Ellen A. Fagenson, Department of Management, George Mason University "Powell does a magnificent job of blending the latest theory and research on gender with sound practical recommendations for addressing critical issues for women in today′s workplace. This second edition is chock-full of vivid examples and makes a valuable contribution to students, managers, and organizations. It is a definite must for those teaching about diversity in the workplace." --Stella M. Nkomo, University of North Carolina at Charlotte What are women and men really like in the workplace? How do they interact? What contributions can members of each sex best make within their organization? Used by thousands of scholars, students, and practitioners in its first edition, Women & Men in Management, Second Edition answers these and other questions by bringing to light the beliefs that men and women still hold, critically examining their relevance to today′s work environment, and recommending how individuals and organizations can successfully respond to them. To reflect the explosion of research over the past 5 years in gender and organization studies, new features of this eagerly awaited edition include references to more than 300 new publications; an all new chapter on sexuality in the workplace, including sexual harassment; and expanded coverage of gender stereotyping, work and personal/family-life issues, and the value of cultural diversity in organizations. This eye-opening second edition is a must-read for professionals, researchers, scholars and students of management and organization studies, gender studies, and sociology.
