Great book!

Woman The Gatherer edited by Frances Dahlberg is just what you need to help balance your views on human evolution and history. First is the clear and crisp introduction explaining why the book was made and why it is important. Then chapter after chapter of well thought out, refreshing studies on female's roles in hunting-gathering societies and how that may be used to understand our past. The first chapter is about the female chimpanzees which is followed by a chapter about female humans as shapers of human adaptation. The next four chapters focus on four different hunter-gatherer cultures and what roles women play within them. Frankly, the only flaw is how short it was. At only 250 pages this is barely touching the surface of the subject. Yet it was published in 1981 which means there should be more books out there on the same subject and I plan to find them. Buy new or used, a must for any library.
