The Twentieth Century's arrival brought change to the American West. The era of Indian Wars, open range, and homesteaders like Nora and Jim Li in this story passed into the romance of legend. Their children and grandchildren became citizens of a nation where tribes like the Blackfeet lived on reservations. For others, ranching or farming expanded to urban industry. Wealth for some increased along with appreciation of the arts, and the entire United States seemed to move at a faster pace. Concern for preserving the natural beauty of places like Glacier National Park fired visions leading to engineering feats that encouraged tourists to travel to the wonders of their own country.
The Great War in Europe led to turmoil in America as it destroyed lives in incomprehensible numbers. Citizens turned wary, ill at ease, and full of dissent. Most in the United States wanted to stay out of war. But an understanding that the nation had transformed into a global presence took hold. Americans accepted the responsibility to protect democracy even if it meant sacrifice.
