Fascinating and Charming

There's a reason I buy used books, and this one exemplifies it. Little notes inside, creases that make the book look loved and a sticker across the top that says "Return to office". That's what makes it charming. What makes it fascinating is the content. Granted, some of the authors of the included essays are writing from a place of slight misandry and the commentary in essays here or there perpetuates certain stereotypes, but if you focus instead on the facts provided rather than the personal commentary, the essays in this book are fascinating and illuminating. What they say is true and they have all the studies in the world to back them up. I greatly enjoyed it.

Still rings true

I found this in a used book store for a couple of dollars, and once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. Thankfully, women have made strides in education and the work place since 1971 when this was published, but the objectification of women in our society has gotten worse; the standards of beauty have narrowed more than ever here and now in 2006. The chapters on beauty, the pressure and expectation to conform to media standards, the indoctrination of younger and younger girls to measure up. The inertia of consumerism and media images, not individual men, reenforce the sexism I see today.
