I came upon only the first installment in this trilogy when I was a boy, and it never left my mind. I recently acquired the books (Wolf-Dreams, The Nightreaver, and Bloodfang) and blazed through them nonstop. This series is amazing. The chronicling of Thyri Eiriksdattir's journey takes place by means of a scrying pool in the hands of. . . someone. The books begin in her village, as a young girl of seven. Thyri is selected for training by a mysterious and powerful sorceress named Scacath, who has already taken Thryi's cousin, Astrid under wing. The training forces Thyri to become familiar with and eventually master a magical sword forged by inhuman hands and to earn several runes of Odin, each with magical properties of their own. As the years pass, Thyri matures and falls in love with her cousin Astrid, upon completing their training with Scacath, the two lovers enmesh themselves in the warlike Norse world of campaigning and battle. One evening Thyri's cousin is slain by a White demon-wolf, and Thyri herself is bitten badly. This wolf is a were-wolf, and Thyri is now subject to it's irresistible monthly appetites. . . The tale from here becomes so grand and complex that it simply must be read. It describes Thyri's humble beginnings and extroardinary part in the fate of the world. Gods are born and fall in the making of this tale, and it is written with beautiful simplistic glory. Very easily one of the best stories I have ever read.
