They’ve morphed Jesus into a barefoot Marxist demanding a heaven-on-earth

Even a non-theologian like myself clearly has observed that mainline Protestant denominations have, by and large, evolved over the past half century into quasi-political activist bodies and safe havens for social justice warriors, that resemble nothing more than “the Democrat Party at prayer”. They’ve morphed Jesus into a barefoot Marxist demanding a heaven-on-earth, to be ruled by our pompous elites. Their sanctimony oozes self-anointed sense of intellectual and moral superiority. Original sin, atonement, forgiveness and salvation are abandoned. In this volume Pastor Lucas Miles confronts the contamination of evangelical churches by “Woke Christianity”. He names names in his autopsy of the progressive cultural elites, ranging from the subtle (e.g., Kant, Hegel, Schweitzer, Marcuse) to the outrageous (e.g., James Cone, Robin DeAngelo, Ibram Kendi). He examines Progressive Christianity by dissecting “alternative Gospels” of Critical Theory, Critical Race Theory and Liberation Theology. Most intriguing to me were his detailed efforts to trace the roots of Woke Christianity all the way back to the Gnosticism heresy of the early 2nd century A.D. If Lucas Miles stresses his viewpoint to an extreme, it is the fundamentalist stringency with which he defines “orthodox Christianity”. He groups scholars who have interpreted the first 11 chapters of Genesis as “mytho-history” as heretical. This is unfair to their efforts to recognize those biblical texts that cogently message the reader by using a metaphorical literary genre. (It would be helpful for Miles to read up on St. Augustine’s warning about Christians who graft tentative scientific conclusions onto biblical accounts.) Nonetheless Americans have a knack of voting with their feet: Members of “Woke” congregations have responded by stampeding --- right out the church front door.
