Three tragic events have happened during my lifetime -- events that have affected all Americans. First there was the treacheruos attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese in 1941, when I was eleven years old. This was followed shortly by the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki when I was fifteen. The third event was the terrorist attack made on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in 2001. I was an eye witness to the destruction of the Twin Towers at seventy-one years old.These three events are part of my history, as they are for many of you, and very much the motivation for writing this book. In "Witness for Atonement" you will read how God changed my heart. I share the events of my life that led me to stand in conscience against the use of weapons of mass destruction on population centers while I was a memeber of the United States Air Force. I believe God brought me to that decision. God changed a heart of stone to a heart of flesh.I encourage you to read this book with an open heart and open mind. Read it prayerfully. I say this, because all of our hearts have been hardened and wounded by these tragic efvents and by the painful events of our own personal experience. We desparately need to face the nuclear age that we are in with the heart of God, not with our own hearts or with our own thinking but with God's. Only in this way can we experience an age of peace upon the earth.
