This is an unusual and valuable collection of short biographies by many well known Irish writers such as Maeve Binchy and Bernard Farrell, journalists such as Gene Kerrigan, Ann Daly and Seamus Dooley, singer Christy Moore and poet Michael O Siadhail. Each author introduces us to an outsider they know and value, and we can see the contribution these outsiders have made in the authors' lives. These stories challenge the reader to replace the common reaction of fear and/or contempt and indifference for outsiders with respect and enjoyment of difference. As with many such collections, a few contributions are a little weaker than the others, but the overall standard is excellent. I strongly recommend the book for those who enjoy short stories, for students of Camus' The Outsider (1955), and of social science.
