"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on thy own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your path." Proverbs 3:5-6 Life can change in the blink of an eye. And it usually happens when we least expect it. That's what happened to Larry and June Slaughter when their son, Steve, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of two. Doctors didn't know a lot about cerebral palsy in 1960, but they did know that the condition can affect mobility, speech and sometimes, cognition. So, they told the Slaughters that Steve would go no further than the sixth grade in school and that they should eventually consider institutional care for him. But these doctors didn't know Larry and June Slaughter. And they didn't know the strength and determination inside the heart and soul of that two-year-old boy. For those who met Steve along the way, they weren't surprised to see him not only finish sixth grade but graduate from high school as well. He went on to earn an associate's degree in ministry and enjoyed a fruitful career as a hospice chaplain. This is the story of how Steve Slaughter thrived, in spite of a debilitating diagnosis at the age of two. This is the story of how Steve's parents wouldn't take no for an answer and gave him every opportunity to advance in life. And is the story of how Steve learned to trust God with all of his heart - even on the darkest of days. "I hope that as people read my story, they will not see me, but rather see God working in the life of someone who was desperately in need of Him. I am a testimony of what God can do with a future that seemed hopeless." Steve Slaughter is a retired hospice chaplain. He has served in a number of Northwest Louisiana churches and has traveled throughout America and eastern Canada preaching and sharing Christ. He lives in Shreveport, Louisiana, with his wife, Bonnie.
