Wisdom Before the Beginning: Lady Wisdom, the Logos, and the Battle over Whether the Son Was Created

By Stephanie Gentry

Was Wisdom created-or did she always exist with God?

Proverbs 8:22 stands at the center of one of Christianity's most consequential debates. The Hebrew verb qān has been translated "possessed," "acquired," and "created." The ancient Greek version explicitly says "created me." Yet the New Testament calls Christ the Wisdom of God and presents the Logos as already existing in the beginning. Do these witnesses describe the same figure-and what can they actually prove about the Son's pre-existence?

Wisdom Before the Beginning follows the evidence from Woman Wisdom in Proverbs through Job, Sirach, Baruch, Wisdom of Solomon, First Enoch, Philo, the New Testament, Arius, Nicaea, and Athanasius.

Stephanie Gentry carefully separates questions that are often collapsed in theological debate:

- What Proverbs meant in its original literary setting
- How the Hebrew and ancient versions differ
- How Jewish Wisdom traditions developed
- How the New Testament relates Christ to Wisdom and the Logos
- How "created" became the battleground behind "begotten, not made"

Accessible to serious readers while grounded in linguistic and historical analysis, this book explains the crucial Hebrew and Greek terms without turning a dictionary gloss into a doctrine.

This is not a defense of a predetermined creed. It is a historical-critical investigation into what the sources say, what later interpreters made of them, and where the available evidence reaches its limit.
